From what I can remember… the Dykeenies gave a cracking performance. Cheap Tetleys goes down too easily.
After putting my beer coat on I was ready to brave the late night stroll to Fuzz club. And despite the miserable rain was in a jolly drunk mood.
First on the stage were Fury of the Headteachers ( ♥♥ ) - a local band who play some interesting music. A little bit of punk mixed with some other experimental noise. Overall they have a very laid back approach with an almost can’t be arsed attitude. Their set was fairly average with one or two half decent songs. The crowd were a little unimpressed but not negative as they stood chatting and swigging.
Then there was The Dykeenies: a fresh pounding sound to lift the crowd, despite being a little static on stage.
The songs they delivered weren’t too heavy (apart from The Panic, which is about STIs) but were far from bland. Several songs were very catchy as despite being intoxicated I remember some lines from Pick You Up and Clean Up Your Eyes. I’ve been humming the parts I don’t.
The crowd were enthusiastic and enjoyed the joyful mainstream tunes. Although sometimes a little emo with all the angst, the influences of Bloc Party and the Killers are apparent and make it more bearable.
The frontman, Brian Henderson, has a slightly whiny voice which somehow fitted nicely with all the rifts. The guy’s accent when he sings is also bizzare when you know he comes from the outskirts of Glasgow. A bit of shame as there is a lack of identity, compared to the likes of Glasvegas who don’t hide their roots for commercial reasons.
The band are capable of some huge anthems as they play tight and have some good ideas, but are let down by laziness in choruses and a lack of soul. The potential is there though, and they give a solid live performance.
