The Peacock was recommended to me as a warm, welcoming, and traditional pub in the Peak District. When I arrived after a long walk in the Peaks, the pub lived up to this description and more. It is a traditional country pub with ‘home made’ food and cask ales. It is situated about thirty minutes outside of Sheffield on the edge of the Peak District and has panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The Peacock has a large special’s blackboard with starters, mains, and desserts to choose from alongside the standard menu. The pub is adorned with pictures of
Sheffield and has a lovely quaint atmosphere. Although the Peacock is part of the ‘Chef and Brewer’ chain, it feels like an independent pub because of the atmosphere and the variety of food offered.
My boyfriend and I sat by a large open fireplace to warm us up and we felt right at home. I am usually skeptical of pubs that advertise their food as ‘home-made’ but my worries were set aside when the food arrived. I ordered the beef and Old Speckled Hen ale pie, described as tender chunks of prime British beef, braised in Old Speckled Hen ale, encased in pastry. The pie was served with creamy mashed potato and seasonal vegetables for a reasonable £7.99. My boyfriend ordered a special of confit of duck in a rich red thai curry sauce accompanied by rice for £10.99. He said the duck was succulent and the sauce flavorsome. In addition, he felt the rice was cooked to perfection. The food arrived within fifteen minutes and was piping hot and looked scrumptious. My pie was light and soft meaning the pastry was clearly home made. The pie came with a pile of creamy mashed potato and courguettes, carrots, green beans and broccoli. Needless to say I had trouble finishing my pie let alone the mashed potato, the meal was very good value for money. My boyfriend enjoyed his duck and found it very filling as the rice came in the same portions as my mashed potato! To accompany our meal we chose a ginger beer, which was reasonably priced. However, the Peacock has three guest ales available at any given time and a wide choice of wines.
Only five tables in The Peacock are smoking meaning the atmosphere is suited for relaxing after a long walk in the peaks. The pub is very relaxed with friendly attentive staff. The service is not fussy and you are left to enjoy the excellent views and fine food on offer. The wide range of specials means different food will always be available. Specials range from traditional pub food to oriental dishes like the duck in red thai sauce. The Peacock is an excellent pub for a break during a walk but if you are hungry stop off for a gorgeous and filling homemade meal.
