City Hall is new “Mayfair”

It was a double celebration for the City Hall on Friday, as not only did it celebrate its 75th birthday, it was unveiled as the occupier of the coveted “Mayfair” spot on the brand new Sheffield version of the ever-popular Monopoly series.

Meadowhall occupies the second most valuable spot on the board, while Sheffield United were awarded for their Premiership status last season with a more valuable spot over their city rivals Sheffield Wednesday, who occupy the ‘Northumberland Avenue’ and ‘Whitehall’ spots respectively.

But what about the two universities? Well, they are both worth the same in game terms, and according to Graham Barnes of GB Publicity “it was the most diplomatic thing to do”.

Other notable Sheffield landmarks on the board are the Crucible Theatre (Coventry Street), the Winter Garden (Pentonville Road) and the Supertram, which occupies what is internationally recognised as the ‘Fenchurch Street’ station spot.

The game is officially sanctioned by the Monopoly owners, and features 33 Sheffield landmarks, which were voted into their positions by the public.

The game’s creator Mark Marriot said: “this game is a celebration of the city and we believe it is going to be the Christmas number one.

“The city’s retailers are going mad for it, and advance orders have been huge! We reckon the only games left on the shop shelves by Christmas will be the ones on Santa’s sleigh,” he said.

Those at Sheffield City Hall were understandably delighted to scoop the top spot on the board and General Manager Dominic Stokes said: “we are very proud to have won the top spot!

“I’d like to thank all those who voted for us to win,” he continued, “our customers have been very loyal and we really appreciate it.”

The game is now on sale in many stores around the city priced at £24.99, or can be purchased online at www.winningmoves.co.uk.

So what are you waiting for? Pass go, collect your £200 and get yourself a game before they sell out!
