Festival Chic!

Our Fashion Ed gives style tips to all those hitting the festivals this summer …..

Yes it’s that time of the year again, festival season! And this year is set to be a blinder with more festivals than you could shake a stick ranging from those in our own glorious Yorkshire fields to the sandy beaches of Spain to the legendary mud filled
Glastonbury.

If you are a festival virgin it can seem somewhat intimidating…

“how do I put up a tent?”

“how will I survive the dreaded toilets?”

and most importantly  “what the hell do I wear?”

Never fear festival newbies as your fashion ed is here to guide you through the dos and don’ts of festival chic.

DO invest in a pair of wellies, the essential festival must have. You have no excuse for not escaping the mud as fashion gurus have graced us with many a funky welly design allowing us to strut our stuff without feeling like a farmer. Check out these babies from Office.co.uk retailing at £19.99 (15% student discount instore) which will look fab teamed with a floral dress or denim skirt and vintage top

DON’T dress a la groupie. Yes you may spot the occasional member of Mystery Jets or some randomner from Hollyoaks, however remember they like you are in a field surrounded by mud and stinking toilets. Leave the stilettos at home girls. Kate Moss is the perfect (fashion!) role model when it comes to festivals, combining clumpy wellies with mini dresses and hot pants.

DO sport a straw hat. Bad hair tends to set in around the third day and thus is the time to start wearing the hat. Last year I sported a flat cap, big mistake, combined with the wellies it was definitely bordering on farmer fashion. The preferred festival head gear this year is the straw cowboy hat. Effortlessly cool, it hides the fringe disaster whilst maintaining some degree of taste, a definite must have. I shall no doubt be rocking this straw cowboy hat from Topshop.co.uk which costs £20.00 (10% student discount in store)

DON’T do what I did last year and forget to take a waterproof! We all know that waterproofs aren’t the most stylish of jackets however I’m loving this cute mac from Peterstorm (available at Millets.co.uk) however it is fairly pricey at £27.00

DO bare those legs in a dress. The prairie girl look is big this season and therefore floral summer dresses are going to be a huge hit at the summer festivals. My personal favourites are this cute festival dress from Missselfrige.com (£32.00 NUS discount instore)

and this funky smock dress from Free People at urbanoutfitters.co.uk (£38.00)

Even though the ‘Maxi’ to-the-floor gown is making a huge impact this season

DON’T be tempted to take one to a festival as it won’t look so chic when it’s 3 inches deep in mud.

Finally the key principle to getting it right at a music festival is not to make too much of an effort. Leave your stilettos, fake eye lashes and straighteners at home, think laid back effortless chic aka Sienna Miller at Glastonbury 2005 where the beauty wowed the crowds in a simple summer dress and shades.

Have fun, enjoy the music and don’t forget to pack your wellies!

All the old stuff I wore as a child is coming back. Kinda scary and makes you feel old, but it looks great most of the time.
