Never fear penniless students! Here at Image we know how to put a good outfit, make that four amazing outfits, together on a tight budget.

We bought one £9.99 dress from H&M and using the many items that lurk in our wardrobes, accessorised a boring black shift dress into four fantastic different looks.

Dinner, date, uni or gig we’ve got it covered, proving just how far a few pennies can really be stretched…

Lovely Layers

Although we’re moving speedily into spring, with the freak April snow storms, layering is always a sensible option, and it’s a great way to achieve several looks with one base item. Here, we layered up the simple black dress with a stone grey polo-neck and thick black tights. The colour co-ordinated boots teamed with baggy grey bobble hat create the casual style we were going for. We added a splash of colour with the purple handkerchief scarf to set off the look and the vintage broach and heavy metallic bangle complete the style. We kept the make-up natural and the hair simply blow dried – a perfect look for a day in lectures or a quick coffee with friends!

Simple and Sophisticated

We created this formal style by keeping it simple; we added a jeweled bow tie waist belt and champagne gold peep-toe stilettos with matching ruched clutch. The base make-up was kept fairly natural with a splash of shocking crimson on the lips. The hair was the main feature of the look being pulled back into a large intricately weaved bun, we definitely recommend Wigs and Warpaint for special occasion do’s!! So for sophisticated chic, keep it simple by combining well co-ordinated accessories with feature hair and make-up; ideal for all those end of year balls coming up!

Groupie Chic

Rock band tees are the uniform of every groupie and combined with pencil skirts look irresistably sexy yet rebellious… so get raiding your mothers’ wardrobes to find some vintage classics. Accessorize Blondie, The Rolling Stones or Ramones with spiked belts and combine plastic and metallic bangles to achieve that effortless “I don’t give a damn!” look. Finish off the outfit with sky scraper high spikey heels or scruffy wore in converse. Back combed bed hair is a must for wild girls so get the wax, hairspray and (if you’re feeling adventurous) the crimpers ready. Make up should be experimental…get creative with bright lips, glittered eyes and smudged eyeliner.

Fifties Glam

Fifties fashion centred around the sexy silhouette. Modern girls can achieve that gorgeous hour glass shape by cinching in the waist with over sized belts and adding extravagant broaches to draw attention to the bust. Jewellery should be kept simple yet classy and so we chose a simple pearl choker, reminiscient of fashion icon Audrey Hepburn. Seamed fishnets add extra sophistication and are great for making legs appear more toned, and sexy stilettos are a must, the higher the better! A simple up do is preferable to show off those lovely cheekbones, and make up should be kept monochrome…think heavy lids, kohl eyeliner, false eyelashes and pale lips.

150 designs have been selected from Vivienne Westwood’s personal archive and the V&A collection.

The exhibition will span her designs from the 1970s to the present day and include punk pieces, ball gowns, tartan, tailoring and the blue platforms Naomi Campbell wore in 1993 when she famously fell on the catwalk.

And last but certainly not least a store which has embraced the star print craze with a passion, none other than trusty Primark. I have been very impressed with the variety of clothes embellished with the star emblem and of course the prices are still extremely low for high fashion items!! The dresses come in several styles from prom to tea, and they all have an individual star print for the different style and material used.

Hell’s Belle, 35, (real name Lara) has been holding Burlesque dance classes in Chapeltown for over a year. The class averages 30 members aged 17-72 and caters to all levels of ability. Those involved come from as far away as
Doncaster and
Barnsley to learn the art of Burlesque; working up to their own desired level as well as performing in cabaret nights and class shows.

Why Burlesque?  The night I visit is former line dancing teacher Michelle’s first night.Asked what made her come along to the class Michelle,34, says: “I like Dita Von Teese, I think she is amazing. I wanted to get back into dancing and get my fitness back and thought this would be a fun way to do it.”           

Dita Von Teese: The Queen of the New Burlesque

Class teacher Lara who has been teaching since she was 18 explains Burlesque has always had a following in this area, but interest has soared since Dita Von Teese entered the media spotlight through her now ended marriage to metal star Marilyn Manson.

“The media interest in Dita Von Teese has really helped Burlesque into the mainstream” says Lara.

 But Burlesque is not just for petite super starlets.

 “Burlesque is for ladies of any age, ability, body size and shape, it’s a celebration of the woman you are.”

As the classes have progressed lara says she has noticed a huge difference in the confidence and self esteem  of the ladies who come along.

 “Burlesque is for ladies of any age, ability, body size and shape, it’s a celebration of the woman you are. The classes offer you the chance to reach your own level and goal, whether that be public performance or the privacy of your own bedroom.” Says Lara.

Kia, 19, from Chapeltown, has long blond hair and curves which could have been made for Burlesque.

 “I want to show him what he’s missing!”

She has been coming to the classes for a few weeks and says she came along to build up her confidence after splitting with an ex.

“It’s early days but Im hoping to get really good and take part in one of the shows, I want to show him what he’s missing!”

What to wear

Some of the ladies in the class are dressed in leggings and oversized tshirts whilst others model frilly corsets with fishnets, most wear high heels.

“The most important thing is to be comfortable, but a  lot of  the women like to dress up so they feel like dancers.” Lara explains.

 “The heels help the women feel different and dance differently as they alter the way you carry yourself, whether you wear them with leggings or stocking and suspenders!”

Nowadays it doesn’t matter whether you have Chloe or Balenciaga on your arm, rather you should be worrying about WHO is on your arm. Yes the gay best friends and ‘handbag dogs’ are out and instead we have a new collection of   accesories firmly linked to the elbows of the beautiful and famous. So get ready to meet this season’s must haves, as I identify the pros and cons of each fabulous accessory!

The Rock Star Boyfriend

Yes ladies he is back in fashion. After Kate dumped Pete, Drew and Fab broke up and Kirsten and Johnny hit the fan we had started to think we had finally seen the end of this trendy must have. Yet never fear skinny jean lovers, as he is back this Spring with a vengence having being seen gracing the arms of many an adoring celebrity lady so far this season. Harry Potter beauty Emma Watson was cast under the spell (sorry couldn’t resist it!) of Razorlight badboy Johnny Borrell, Alexa Chung has been listening to the sweet nothings of Arctic Monkey’s Alex Turner and Kate Moss is rumoured to be engaged to her frontman-trade in Jamie Hince from The Kills.

Advantages

• As well as having a gorgeous man on your arm, you can also be provided with accompanying walking music.
• You get to drink their free alcohol backstage at gigs.
• They always have hair wax and hair spray at the ready.

Disadvantages

• His skinny jeans are smaller than yours.
• You can’t actually find him backstage as he is surrounded by trashed groupies who’ve already drank the rider dry.
• His bandmates become a constant fixture on your bedroom floor.

The Fashion Designer

The famous fashion designer is quite possibly the best accesory to have on your arm. They are fashionable by default thereby giving you ultimate credibility. Britain’s favourite northern lass, model Agyness Dean has been making us all envious not only by stealing the title of ‘world’s best dressed woman’ from Kate Moss but also through her friendship with fashion icon Henry Holland. New brunette Claudia Schiffer has also been seen clinging on the arm of and listening intently to fashion legend Karl Largerfeld and Cavalli has reportedly been running after Amy Winehouse. Jealous, me?

Advantages

• If you come down with a horrible eye infection a la Agyness Dean, there’s no need to stay at home on a Saturday, your fashion designer friend can fashion you a trendy eye patch.
• Freebies, need I say more?

Disadvantages

• Fashion is a fickle world, you could be dumped quicker than red jeans were.
• No one likes being told their new dress is “so out darling!”
• You can’t fit your arm let alone your waist into your friend’s new, designer, chunky belts.

The Failed Celebrity

There’s no better ego boost  for a celebrity than having a failed one hanging off their arm. A sort of  “aren’t I a nice person for hanging out with this D lister?” Sienna Miller can currently be seen smooching her  ‘Shaggy from Scooby Doo lookalike’ Rhys Ifans, apparently trendy on the Primrose Hill set but best known to most of us as the crazy Welsh bloke in Notting Hill. Mark Ronson has also been reportedly befriending and signing up reality tv star rejects for his new female super group and  IT girl Alexa Chung has been caught giggling at fashion shows with new best friend Kelly Osbourne.

Advantages

• You can send them to do your errands
• They will always appreciate your company

Disadvantages

• You need to be above D List celeb status for this to work
• Desperation is not becoming in a friendship

So after summing up the evidence regarding groupies, fashion criticism and d listers… I’ve decided that this season I’d much rather stick with the over the body bags and t bar shoes thanks!

London is notorious for being a creative hub welcoming creativity and quirkiness and 10/02- 15/02/08 London Fashion Week certainly lived up to its reputation. However, this year seemed even more special due to the return of some of our long missed British designers to the LFW catwalks. Most notably the return after ten years of the Queen of British fashion, Dame Vivienne Westwood. Her more affordable diffusion Red Label collection hit the runway on Thursday with sexy but off-kilter tailoring, rich reds and purples and, of course, a generous helping of tartan.

The Big Trends

Sequins: yes they’ve been done before but Christopher Kane super-sized them and layered them under chiffon for a classy twist:

Ruffles: don’t worry, Im not just talking girly and flouncy, rather feminine but dramatic. Luella and Roksanda Ilinic did it best.

Colour: bold colour blocks, interesting combinations. Lots of old rules were broken. Amanda Wakeley kept it elegant with flowing columns of colour.

Layers and shapes: High-waisted trousers and skirts were seen on the catwalk and the front row. Bubble silhouettes are still around and these interesting shapes were accented by contrasting textures and colours.

Being London there was a high dose of quirkiness; Gareth Pugh’s models had blue lips, Luella had a Halloween themed show and Henry Holland even made his best-friend and model, Agyness Deyn, a tartan eye-patch as she had conjunctivitis, how nice! It may not have the haute couture or displays from all the big fashion houses of the fashion weeks in Milan, NY or Paris but London is definitely the most innovative, eccentric and fun. We wouldn’t expect anything less.

Indeed fashionistas world wide were crying out in horror at the wardrobe malfunctions on show at this weeks Brit Awards, and as for Hollywood’s ‘most glamorous event’ the Oscars; well we haven’t seen anything that stomach churning since Gwyneth Paltrow’s acceptance speech.

So what has been going on in the celeb land of style? Well it seems the problem is two fold. The Americans have gone tedious and the Brits well…trashy

In the US the stars seem to have somewhat muted their tastes in styling. Perhaps the ‘understated look’ has become the new vogue after what seems to have been a year of paparazzi shots of various LA darlings falling out of limos minus somewhat essential underwear.

Indeed the Oscars saw a number of celebs opting for the safe option, Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Garner, Hilary Swank and Ellen Page all succumbed to the ladies’ favourite clothing choice - the infamous ‘Black Dress’….which although can be identified with by many women , it simply leaves the rest of us shouting, “ Come on Swank its Oscars Night …we expect to see some bling!”

Much credit however has to be given to Brit Julie Christie, who although was the oldest woman nominated in her section, still caused a stir in her dress by showing some much needed leg! Britain salutes you Jules! Biggest Oscar faux pas of the night? Cameron Diaz wearing the same dress she wore last year? Errr nice one Cam, it may work for weddings love, but not the Oscars!

On the other side of the Atlantic this week we had the Brits strutting down the red carpet in honour of the music industry. Now whereas our American friends seem to have learnt well from the much reported and frequent fashion disasters of Britney, Paris and Lindsay, the Brits not to be outdone by decided to showcase quite possibly some of the worst outfits ever seen on the red carpet at the 2008 Brit Awards.

I’m not sure even where to begin with this tirade of fashion no gos….perhaps Fearne Cotton’s bizarre Chinese romper suit, Denise Van ‘Bums Out’ en again or Abbey Clancy’s subtle combination of leopard print underwear and a see through dress. Or maybe just maybe local boys Arctic Monkeys win the worst outfit award for their attempt at being “ironic” by dressing like toffs and instead… looking like royal idiots. You’ve let us down lads.

One good thing has come out of this awful turn of events, after the fashion crimes I have witnessed this week, its fair to say that this fashionista will definitely never steal a celebs’ style again!

So it doesn’t quite feel like spring is just around the corner, in fact it couldn’t feel more like the depths of winter. But the new season is fast approaching, so move over woolen thick knit, hello light and breezy fabrics; the time is coming when you can leave the house not wearing a coat. To make sure you’re looking at your best, Image brings you the latest spring / summer trends that you will want to be seen wearing in the coming months.

Stars and Stripes

Okay, so you’d have to be walking around with your eyes closed this season if you hadn’t noticed stars. They are everywhere and being worn by everyone. Paris Hilton, Kate Moss, you name it. It would just be silly not to get on board with this trend. We’re not talking black emo-tattoo-on-the-wrist-or-ankle type stars. This season, stars are scattered on sheer ruffled fabrics, as though you’d just been visited by Aryans Belt. This once adolescent, amateur-looking trend now looks adult and feminine, yet provides a quirky style. Stripes are also key this spring / summer, think thin horizontal stripes, blue, black or red with white. Team stripes with black or dark denim this season, giving a stylish European look. Stars and stripes are definite must buys if you’re looking for something to bring your wardrobe right into this year’s spring / summer collection.

Sheer Bliss

Look out for sheer fabrics this spring; anything light and breezy which will float around and create movement. Okay, so at the moment, we’re dealing with something more like gale-force winds, but until the weather starts to look up, layer sheers over jeans or underneath cardigans. Wearing sheer tops with just underwear underneath is a good look for evening wear, and it’s definitely a key style of the season. Make sure its solid, highly structured underwear to give just a hint of what’s underneath. This spring / summer is all about getting in touch with your feminine side, so embrace it and keep fingers crossed for the weather to match!

Sharp Tailoring

This season its all about tailoring, think waistcoats and blazers teamed with wide-leg jeans or high-waisted shorts. Mix waistcoats with floaty blouses or sheers underneath; this gives this masculine look a more feminine edge. This trend couldn’t be further from the outdated 90’s power-suit, it’s all about looking feminine and girly in contrast with the suit-like pieces.  Sharp lines are all over the catwalk and should be in your wardrobe, so be careful not to cut yourself on this razor-sharp trend.

Handsome Prints

Alongside stars and stripes, innovative, bold prints are big this spring / summer. Think African safari, bold swirls of browns and oranges, in light chiffon or silk fabrics. Alternatively, artwork is having a high influence on fashion this season, so look out for bold prints in even bolder colours.

Oversize to Accessorize

Accessories are BIG this season. I mean large, gigantic, oversized big. You name it, from jewelry to bags, from bags to shoes. In terms of jewelry, think bangles, bangles, bangles. The bigger, the chunkier, and the more outrageous the better. Chunky, extreme wedges are must haves, not only are they the thing to be wearing this spring / summer, they add infinite inches to your height too. The must have bag for this season is the clutch, and again you guessed it, the bigger the better.
